Kiwanis of Denver West was formed August 5, 2004. Our
charter members serve as community and business leaders in
Lakewood, Golden, and the surrounding area.
In August of 2004, a few members of the Denver West business
community and the surrounding Kiwanis communities decided
to start a club for the Denver West region. Little did they
know what they were starting.
The club gathered a lot of interest from the very beginning.
We were soon chartered and operational. Every speech we heard
as the club began encouraged us to "think outside the
box" and to "break the mold." We took that
to heart. And they probably wish they never asked us to.
What do we do?
- We provide funding for many Kiwanis-sponsored projects
such as the Windy Peaks observatory project and the School
of Mines Circle K Mammoth Project to build homes and schools in Mexico.
- We provide funding and assistance to numerous non-Kiwanis
projects like the the Lakewood Police Explorers program, the Internet Crimes against Children task force, Second Wind fund to prevent teenage suicide,
Youth Leadership Jefferson County, Links for Learning, HOBY Colorado Leadership Seminar, Camp PAHA, Destination Imagination – Dunstan Middle School, and
the Lakewood Westernaires.
- We coach youth soccer in the spring and fall for the Foothills
Parks and Recreation district.
- We annually participate in the Lakewood Police Department's Caring by Sharing program, providing Christmas dinners to assisted living homes in Lakewood.
- We have volunteered hundreds of combined hours to the
Huntingtons Disease Society of America.
- We have organized the annual wine tasting fundraiser for Helping
Hearts and Hands.
- We conduct an annual Casino Night fundraiser to raise
money for our various programs.
- We volunteer at service stations for community events such as the Colfax Marathon and Belmar's Festival Italiano.
- We helped pay to send the Colorado Wildfire youth baseball
team to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
- We purchased a Sports Authority gift card for a youth who was unable to afford sporting equipment.
- We provided Lakewood teens with free seminars and classes
on various subjects from "what is a typical day in
college" to "how to build a website."
- We gave each of the graduating senior members of the Lakewood
Youth Commission a $500 scholarship to get them started
in college.
- We donated money to a college -bound high school senior to attend a medical leadership program.
- We donated monetary and food contributions to a Alameda
High School student in need of financial assistance.
- We purchased Christmas presents for a single-parent family of 6.
- We provided the Lakewood Youth Commission and the Lakewood
Link Rec Center with much needed funding for drum risers
for their Battle of the Bands competition.
- We helped the Lakewood Youth Commission pull off their
successful Jingle Jam event by providing event t-shirts,
food, and volunteer time.
- We provided free bowling and food for the members of the
Lakewood Youth Commission in appreciation for all their
hard work.
- We make occasional presentations to the City Council on
behalf of the club.
- We have held book sales at Colorado Mills Mall to raise
money for various projects and schools.
- Our members put in hundreds of volunteer hours on boards,
commissions, councils, and campaigns year round.
...and that's only since 2004!
