|

| Jefferson County businesses, community
step up for 300 students Three hundred third and
sixth grade students from four of Jeffco Public Schools’
high impact schools will meet a NASA astronaut and have a
special viewing of the movie “Magnificent Desolation:
Walking on the Moon 3D,” thanks to the generosity of
the nation’s largest space manufacturer and three local
non-profits. The event is at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 14, at
the United Artist Theater (I-25 and Colorado Blvd.) in Denver.
Lockheed-Martin Space Systems of Littleton is purchasing
the movie tickets and refreshments for the students who attend
Title 1 elementary schools, including Edgewater, Fitzmorris,
Kullerstrand and Stevens. The Jefferson Foundation, the Kiwanis
Club of Denver West and the Arvada Wheat Ridge Service
Ambassadors for Youth are covering the transportation costs.
The students will meet with retired NASA astronaut Bruce
McCandless, the first astronaut to fly untethered in space,
and has flown both Apollo and shuttle missions. The experience
will give the students a chance to learn from McCandless what
it was like for the 12 American astronauts who flew in space
and actually walked on the moon. McCandless was a support
crew member for Apollo 14 and the backup pilot for the first
manned Skylab mission. He also flew as a mission specialist
on the Challenger (STS-41B) and Discovery (STS-31) space shuttles.
He has logged more than 312 hours in space, including four
hours solo outside the shuttle.
Title I funds are federal monies targeted to schools in high
poverty areas to provide literacy and mathematics to disadvantaged
children to help them achieve district and state standards
alongside their peers. |
